We honor our Veterans every November 11, but how are we supporting them year-round?

Fewer than 50% of returning Veterans in need receive any mental health treatment.
Approximately 17 Veterans died by suicide every day in 2019. Many of the crisis calls their counselors handle begin with issues of isolation and loneliness.

Between 37 and 50% of Veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq have been diagnosed with a mental disorder associated with substance use disorders, and that 63% of those diagnosed with SUDs also met criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder.

So let's support our Veterans by destigmatizing their internal battles, alleviating their stress by increasing our awareness, and understanding of their journeys:

1. Encourage them to seek professional help

2. Be a good listener; non-judgmental, empathetic, and understanding.

3. Stay connected: Regularly check in on them, maintaining a supportive presence in their life to help combat feelings of isolation.

4. Educate yourself: Learn about common mental health issues affecting veterans, so you can better understand their experiences and challenges.

5. Assist with practical matters: Offer assistance with daily tasks or provide resources that may alleviate stressors in their life.

6. Foster a sense of community: Help them connect with other veterans who may share similar experiences, reinforcing a supportive network.
